    Childhood Obesity:A Rising Health Problem

    By: Shivani Thakur

Childhood  Obesity : A Rising Health Problem A few decades back a fat child meant a healthy child, one who was likely to survive the rigors of under nourishment & infection. The basic physics of weight gain are such that when energy or calorie intake exceeds energy use by 3500Kcal, weight gain of one pound occurs. An excess of only 10 Kcal per day yields weight gain of 10lb per year. Obesity adversely affects the health of children & also it affects them emotionally & psychologically. Obese children are suffering from teasing by their peers. But they can also lead to life threatening conditions including: Diabetes, high blood pressure, sleep problems, skin infections, early puberty, eating disorders, respiratory problem etc. The main cause of childhood obesity in these days is life style pattern i.e. daily routine of child which include hours of sleeping, walking, outdoor activities, number of hours of television viewing, frequency of dining out, types of meals taken at school ,  in between munching, consume excessive amount of energy dense food while watching T.V. the feeding of  children on formula milk during early infancy also influence overweight and obesity among children. Excess calorie intake is not the only problem, but their source is also important like grains, veg. , legumes, fruits are less fattening than sweets refined baked goods, pizza, patties etc. . Kids who are physically inactive are more prone to obesity as compared to those who are active, regularly take part in sports, yoga, regularly play in play grounds, parks . Few Suggestions To Treatment And Prevention: In home it%u2019s parents responsibility to set aside time for health meals, physical activities, limit television viewing, removal of calorically dense food from home. Schools should establish stricter standards for physical education, sports, school lunch. Unhealthy food should eliminate from school canteen. Urban design should be such that parks/playgrounds, side walks, padestrianzones, open spaces should be in each sector or locality. There should be tax on fast food & soft drinks, and subsidies nutritious food e.g fruits, veg . Counsel entire family so that they can encourage their child and give positive enforcement for healthy life style changes as the obese child will become an  obese adult. At the end the overwhelming key to child%u2019s success is the positive involvement of parents as your child will follow your example not your advice.

    Diarrhea: Don't Take it Easy

    By: Shivani Thakur

Diarrheal diseases have been recognized as a major public health problem in the developing world. According to WHO estimate, every child under the age of 5 years in the developing world suffers from, on average 2-3 episodes of diarrhea per year. In the first two years of life as many as 20 per 1000 children may die from diarrhea. Diarrhea frequently causes dehydration through the passage of loose watery stools. Number of stools varies from several per day to one every few minutes. Causes of Diarrhea: Poor Nutrition Infection(Virus) Infection of the Gut(Bacteria, Amoebas, Giardia) Worm Infection Infections outside the gut(ear infection, tonsillitis, measles ,urinary infection) Malaria(falciparum type) Food Poisoning Inability to digest milk(severe malnourished child) Allergies( babies to cow milk) Side effect of a certain medicine(ampicillin, tetracycline) Laxatives, eating too much unripe fruits or heavy greasy foods) Shortage of water and unclean conditions (no toilets)   Stay Hydrated to Replace Fluid Losses Be sure to drink plenty of clear liquids (water, ginger ale, coconut water or electrolyte replacement drinks) for 12 to 24 hours after a sudden bout of diarrhea. Make a homemade electrolyte replacement drink by mixing the following ingredients:-  1/4tsp salt , 8 tsp sugar, 3 tbsp orange juice concentrate and 4 cups of water                             In 1 litre boiled and cooled water mixed with 20gm glucose or 40gm sugar                             In one litre of water, add 50gm (or 2 heaped tablespoon) rice powder and boil for 4-5 minutes. 3.5gm or ? tsp common salt 2.5gm soda-bi-carbonate 1.5gm potassium chloride or a little lemon juice Give at least 4-6 glasses per day. The rice formula can be kept at room temperature for 5-6 hours and in a refrigerator for 24 hrs.  Some Changes that%u2019s help to reduce weakness during Diarrhea Eat 5 to 6 small meals per day instead of 3 larger meals. Eating smaller meals may put less stress on your bowels and will make it easier for your body to digest food. Choose foods and drinks carefully. If the patient is able to eat, he can be given ripen bananas, soft-cooked rice, curds, bread, mashed potatoes and arrowroot biscuits. Breast feeding of infants should be continued throughout. Adequate supply of fluids containing electrolytes is vital. Juices of pomegranate,  orange, buttermilk or coconut water, barley water with milk and sugar can be given. Certain natural remedies have been found to be effective. They are carrot soup,  banana, peeled apple, turmeric powder, curd/buttermilk and garlic. Acidified milk (dahi or curd) overcomes intestinal flora and re-establishes the normal, benign flora. Garlic kills parasites. Foods to Avoid:- Fibre cereals such as bran flakes. Fatty or fried foods Pickled or spicy foods Raw fruits and vegetables Caffeine or Alcohol Preventing Diarrhea: [*] To prevent the spread of infections that cause diarrhea you should always maintain standards of hygiene. [*] Practicing good food hygiene will help avoid getting diarrhea as a result of food poisoning. [*] Rotavirus is a virus that commonly causes diarrhea in children. A vaccine that helps, protects the children against Rotavirus.
