Insulin Therapy and Diet Therapy- Partners in Health

    By: Smita Singh

Diabetes! It might throw anyone into disarray especially when any of you or your dear one is suffering from the disorder. Diabetes can be well managed and controlled by Insulin Therapy and Diet Therapy as a partner or by Diet Therapy alone with some lifestyle changes.    Do all diabetics require Insulin therapy? No, not all diabetics require Insulin therapy. Those who are diagnosed with Type I (Juvenile Diabetes) require insulin shots throughout their life because their body is not manufacturing the needed insulin necessary to live. In Type II (Adult Diabetes) body produce not enough insulin or cannot be used properly and thus oral drugs are required with altered diet plan and lifestyle. A judicious use of insulin therapy is desired for optimal management when report acute illness or surgery, pregnancy, glucose toxicity, contraindications to or failure to achieve goals with oral antidiabetic medications. The type of insulin, how much is used, and how often it is taken depends on the individual. Do all diabetics require Diet Therapy? Yes, Diet Therapy has a pivotal role in preventing and controlling all types of Diabetes. Like all other treatments, Diet therapy aims to maintain blood sugar that is as close to normal as possible without experiencing hypoglycemia. It plays much more important role when Insulin therapy is involved in management.     Is Insulin and Diet Therapy- Partners in Diabetes Health? Yes, Insulin therapy conjugates with Diet therapy in maintenance of target blood glucose levels. Diet and meal patterns depend upon the dose and type of insulin used in treatment regimen. Insulin releases needed sugar from the bloodstream into the cells. Depending upon the type of insulin prescribed by your doctor you may plan your meal in advance to achieve a consistent percentage of nutrients. Consistently eating at the same times every day is important for some people, especially those who take long-acting insulin (eg, NPH) and skipping or delaying meals can make you at risk of hypoglycemia. The carbohydrate content of your meal snacks will determine the amount of rapid or short acting insulin while glycemic effect of protein or fat content will determine the amount of intermediate acting insulin. A simple Carbohydrate count is generally used which sets number of insulin units in intensive insulin therapy. For further enquiry, please feel free to contact me and also help you to build a meal plan that fits all your individualized medical needs.

    By: Smita Singh

5 WAYS TO RECOMMIT TO YOUR NEW YEAR HEALTHY EATING GOALS Brace yourself!! Its January….and If eating healthier is one of your top New Year priorities, that's great. But those well intentioned may be a too-hard-to-define goal that isn’t nearly as easy done as said. Stop thinking to overhaul your entire diet in a day! Make it simple and small and you can reach any diet goal -- one focused step at a time. Diet Resolution 1: CUT DOWN YOUR SUGARS…. Limiting your sugar is a gradual process and doesn’t happen overnight. But once you finish a week you will realize it’s not that complicated. Replace sugars with stevia leaves or non calorie sweetners initially. Diet Resolution 2: ADD COLORS TO YOUR PLATTER… Try to add 5-6 colors to your meal especially more of bright one like red, orange, green ….They will give you most vitamins, minerals, fibres which will boost up our immunity and shed your flabs. Diet Resolution 3: HYDRATE YOURSELF Drink water sumptuously throughout the day, whenever you are thirsty or have binge for cola. It's cheap, fat-free, and gives your body a quenching boost.  Diet Resolution 4: ADD DIFFERENT SEEDS Seeds are now designated as superfood due to their high nutritive value. They are full of fibres proteins, omega fatty acids vitamins minerals and list goes on.. So add at least 1 Tablespoon one type of seeds daily like sunflower, chia, flax, pumpkin etc. Diet Resolution 5: REIGN IN THE MUNCHIES Pop up a gum or sugar free mint whenever you are stressed out and want to nibble. Try to Resolve these small diet resolutions this year and then just watch how far you'll go! By Dr Smita Singh Clinical Dietitian 9415938265 www.wellnessdiet.zest.md
