How Important Is Breakfast In Our Diet?

    By: Amruta Bhalerao

Tell me this; can you drive your car without fuel? No, right! Then why would you make your body start the day without its most essential fuel? After sleep, where your body is fasting for 5-8 hours, your body is drained of its fuel. So, to wake up and become fresh, you need to feed your body breakfast. Breakfast literally means breaking the fast. In the current fast paced, high stress society, no one has time for breakfast. This habit of skipping breakfast is only going to make your health suffer in the long run. Reasons to eat a good heavy breakfast: 1. Improves your metabolism and boosts energy levels.  2. Breakfast restores glucose levels, which is an essential carbohydrate that is needed for the brain to function. 3. Improves memory and concentration levels. 4. Helps you tide over and maintain energy through the day in case you end up skipping lunch or other meals due to a busy schedule. 5. Reduces obesity. 6. Reduces over eating at lunch or snacking on high fat/high calorie foods like farsan, sweets, chocolates, samosa%u2019s, and other snack items. 7. Makes us happier, reduces irritation and stress. 8. Reduces acidity/reflux For those of you who are always in a hurry these are some breakfast options for you: 1. 1 fruit left over chapati vegetable 2. 1 fruit 1-2 slices of toasted bread 1 boiled egg (with or without yolk) 3. 1 fruit milk and cereal 4. At least 1 fruit a glass of milk 1 boiled egg 5. 1 fruit a small bowl of whole green moong (the moong can be boiled the previous night and kept)

    Water Intake

    By: Amruta Bhalerao

The human body is made up of about 60-70 percent water. We need water to help us digest food, carry nutrients, remove waste, cushion organs and maintain fluid and electrolyte balance. Water is found in the foods we eat and the beverages we drink every day. Fluids help in: Controlling body temperature Digestion of food Carries nutrients in your body Cushions organs and joints Getting rid of waste from the body Maintains regular bowel movement Reduces/cures acidity Sweating, breathing, and getting rid of waste all involve water loss. If the loss of water is more than what you consume each day then it can cause dehydration. Signs of dehydration: Dry lips Dark yellow and strong smelling urine Irritability Tiredness/exhaustion Thirst Sometimes during severe dehydration, you are just not able to drink water and get a metallic taste in the mouth and feel like vomiting. (Please go to your family doctor immediately). Headache Fainting/dizziness Low blood pressure   Water intake per day: As per The Institute of Medicine, the AI (Adequate Intake) for men is about 3 Liters (about 13 cups) of total fluid in a day. The AI for women is 2.2 Liters (about 9 cups). I would recommend at least 3 to 3.5 liters per day of total fluid per day. Fluids would comprise of your water, buttermilk, watery fruits, coconut water, thin dals, etc. Water intake in the winter: Usually people drink very little water in the winter as they say that they don%u2019t feel thirsty at all. In the winter, as the temperature outside gradually drops, we find ourselves covered in layers of clothing or sitting in front of heaters. This artificial environment that we create to ward to the winter can cause dehydration in our body. Since the outside weather is dry, you have to manage your fluid intake so that your skin does not look dry or stretched, or feel too sleepy. Also we tend to eat more during winters, so we definitely need water to carry out the digestive functions of the body. No matter what the season, it is very essential to drink 3 to 3.5 liters of total fluid per day. Tips to improve your fluid intake: ?         Drink a couple of glasses of water as soon as you wake up. ?         Dilute your milk while drinking tea or coffee, or switch to black tea or black coffee. ?         Before each meal drink a glass of water and then eat. This will not only help in improving water intake but it will stop you from over stuffing yourself. ?         At bedtime have a glass of water. ?         Carry a small bottle of water with you in your purse or keep it at your desk. ?         Substitute your aerated drinks, coffee, tea, etc with lime juice, coconut water, or plain water.
